Think you know what to wear for your corporate headshot? You might be surprised! In this post, we’ll talk about what NOT to wear, and provide some tips on dressing for your next headshot session.

  • Avoid wearing anything with large patterns. Wearing something with busy patterns can be distracting! Instead, stick to more solid colors or small prints that will help you look professional without upstaging you.
  • Don’t wear anything too tight or revealing. When it comes to business headshots, the goal is for the shot to look professional and provide confidence in your skills- not your looks. I’ve had clients come in and completely miss the mark by dressing as though they are going to a club rather than to work. All this accomplishes is the ability to attract people who are interested in you sexually but not interested in taking you seriously as a professional. I personally worry that someone who is too overt in their business headshots might be a bit of a narcissist and therefore isn’t good at their job.
  • Keep jewelry and accessories to a minimum. A few accessories are fine, especially if they speak to your target audience. If you plan to wear jewelry in your shots, steer clear of anything large and distracting. Instead, go for more understated pieces that help you look polished, without distracting from your face.

Many photographers, like myself, are able to provide guidance on what you should or shouldn’t wear for your business headshots. If you’re in doubt, it never hurts to reach out to your photographer prior to the shoot to get their insight!

Although it’s important to look polished and professional, you don’t want to overshadow your personality or come across as stiff or uncomfortable. With a little bit of thought and preparation, you can easily steer clear of these wardrobe mistakes and put your best face forward in front of the camera.
