3 Easy Steps to to Get Good Reviews as a Photographer

The secret to having clients who rave about you as a photographer and send you all their friends, believe it or not, isn’t ONLY doing great work.
It’s about creating a memorable and exceptional VIP experience for every single client.
Because people will always remember how you make them feel even after they’ve forgotten what your images looked like.
In the early days of my career, I made lots of mistakes and of course learned from them.
One time I said the wrong thing to a girl who wasn’t able to give me what I wanted when I was directing her. I don’t even remember what I said but she got visibly emotional and being the uncomfortable person that I am around people who cry (and I equally don’t like to show emotion in front of strangers), I didn’t know how to handle it. So I didn’t.
Well, she never forgot it. That girl came after me hard AND for 3 years… she essentially wanted to destroy my business.
Lesson learned.
Remember this: Every person who gives you money to take their picture is gold. And every single person deserves to have an amazing experience.
This goes for your team too. Your makeup artists and your assistants need to be as mindful as you are about the client experience.
💁🏼‍♀️One of my makeup artists pushed back with a little attitude one time when working with a demanding client and the client gave my studio a bad review.
So what does providing a VIP experience look like if you want to attract more business?
1. Invite them in with a warm welcome:
The first interaction with your client sets the tone for the rest of the day so I make it a point to greet them with a personalized “welcome” written on my chalkboard door decal. I then offer them coffee, tea, water and the music of their choice with the same hospitality I would offer to guests at my own dinner party. This makes them feel special and instantly helps to get rid of nerves.
2. Create a collaborative environment:
During the shoot, I make clients feel 1000% comfortable to speak up about what they like and what they don’t like. I address subtle cues that might mean they’re not speaking up and I make sure they feel like we are in a collaborative space creating TOGETHER. I always come up with solutions to help struggling subjects and I never (again) point out what they’re doing wrong.
3. Pay close attention to the details:
I’m a stickler for details… because apparently so many photographers aren’t.
I hear it all the time, “thank you so much for taking the time” or, “thank you for paying attention.”
Clients really appreciate when you pay attention to hair placement, wardrobe placement, wrinkles on wardrobe, makeup and touch-ups that are needed.
BONUS: Provide the essentials:
If you really want to make a positive impact on your client’s experience, I suggest providing essential supplies for when your client forgets something at home.
I’ve saved the day many times because I stock shaving cream and disposable razors at my studio.
This not only makes me look like a hero but also a total pro because it demonstrates thoughtfulness and a dedication to getting the job done right.
These simple practices leave your clients with a positive experience and with a feeling that you actually care, as you should.
And of course, a memorable experience translates to rave reviews and more business!
hi, i’m vanie!

Pronounced like Bonnie… and I blame my parents for the misspelling of my name! I went from having $300 in the bank to building a six-figure headshot photography business doing what I love. I’m here to teach you how to do the same!
