If you know my story, you know that when I started working as a photographer, I didnât have a studio and I worked from home.
Working from home was cool ‘cuz I didnât have the added expense of the studio overhead BUT it definitely had its challenges.
I had to constantly keep my place clean for visitors. Iâm tidy, but itâs nice to let loose sometimes you know?
And I had to constantly ask clients if they were allergic to cats. Sometimes Iâd have to lock up my poor cats (I always had anywhere from two to four cats back then). Iâve somehow now ended up with three dogs and one cat.
The biggest challenge of all was finding locations to shoot.
I shot with natural light before I learned how to shoot strobes and because of that, I became a master at making natural light work for me.
Drop me in any city, any time of day, and I can create awesome headshots without scouting locations in advance.
The key to awesome looking natural light headshots is âopen shadeâ, but not just any âopen shade.â
Iâm a stickler for getting that catch light in the eyes. Without it, I donât like how headshots turn out.
So I made a video on Instagram (cuz obviously writing about how to shoot wouldnât really hit the mark) to show how I pick locations that work for headshots, rain or shine, cloudy day or sunny day.
Click here to watch the video.
DM me if you learn something new and let me know if you found it helpful. Iâm always looking to create more of what you personally need!
