Best tips for interviewing headshot photographers

[LA Headshot Photographers by Vanie]

When you’re searching for a headshot photographer, are you โ€œinterviewingโ€ them by sending a few emails ๐Ÿ“ง back and forth?
ย
Is it really possible for you to know whether a photographer youโ€™re going to spend a few hours with (whose images you expect results from) is the right one for you if you donโ€™t even hear his or her voice?
ย

Best Headshots LA

Allyson Smith: Detective / Creative Professional

MORE IMPORTANTLY, do you believe you can achieve results without preparing the photographer for what you need?
ย
Have you ever booked a session with a photographer you didnโ€™t speak with, only to be disappointed with the results? ๐Ÿ‘Ž
ย
I often receive emails from actors who share with me their disappointment with headshots taken by another photographer, yet these same actors arenโ€™t willing to get on the phone to speak with me during their research to share their expectations. ๐Ÿค”
ย

Amanda Romeo: Creative Professional / Hipster

Alastar Dimitrie: Professor / Anit-Hero

EVEN THOUGH I ENCOURAGE ACTORS TO CHAT WITH ME, many opt to email instead.
ย
Here are a few typical comments taken directly from our email exchanges:
ย
  • โ€œI am interviewing other photographers as well and will let you know what I decide.โ€
  • โ€œIt is important to me to find the right photographer and get the right shots.โ€
  • โ€œIโ€™m very photogenic, but I have a hard time getting shots that really sell me.โ€
  • โ€œI saw my friendโ€™s headshots so I made an appointment with that photographer, but my headshots didnโ€™t turn out well.โ€

Callie Holt: BBQ Mom / Claire Burgi: Barista

Bruce Gale: Couple headshot for commercials

Sure, email is a good place to start the conversation, and perhaps even ask a few questions about prices, etcโ€ฆ but only by speaking to the photographer can you have an in-depth discussion about your headshot goals. ๐Ÿฅ…
ย
Share with the photographer what you expect from the session, and learn about how that particular photographer works during the session.ย
ย

Elise Arndt: Upscale Business / Office Girl / Suburban Mom

Kassandra Rosales: BBQ Mom / Athlete

This is important, don’t you think? What if you don’t jive with them or their process?
ย
But also, I use the information you give me to share with you what you can bring to the session, so that Iโ€™m better able to meet your expectations and do my job effectively.
ย

Liza Dean: 50’s Housewife / Heroine / Hipster

Liz Gates: / Nyla Patterson: Blue Collar / Student

Richelle Meiss: Lawyer / Best Friend

I SUGGEST YOU TAKE THE TIME and talk ๐Ÿ“ฒ the photographer youโ€™re interested in to really interview them.
ย
Discuss your marketing needs and help them, help you, achieve your goals.
ย
Otherwise, youโ€™ll have no way way of determining who is the right photographer for you!
