Why Incentivizing Referrals as a Photographer Doesn’t Work

Have you ever tried to start a referral program incentivizing referrals from clients by offering to pay them?

Like “If you refer me, you get $50 for every person I shoot”?

Well if you have, you’ve probably figured out it doesn’t work.

It BARELY works with affiliate programs that track an easy referral link for clients to pass on, for a commission if the referee purchases using the link.

Barely

…and with a lot of coaxing to be pro-active in sharing the link.

See the reason this kind of marketing doesn’t work and doesn’t help grow your business is because it’s asking clients to be pro-active on your behalf.

And let’s face it, in today’s world, people are just too busy to be pro-active.

So what does work?

✨Putting out killer photos with a killer experience to boot.✨

THAT will have clients proactively sharing the photos they’re so in love with on social media where they’ll get hundreds if not thousands of eye balls👀 on your images.

See that works because most people are more motivated by sharing photos of themselves they’re proud of than they are by money.

Those photos make them look good and therefore, worthy of sharing.

In fact, by giving them killer photos, you also give them content to share that they didn’t have to come up with on their own! Hello, it’s a win win!

And if you provided a killer experience, then those photos get tagged and captioned talking about how awesome you are WITHOUT ever having to require that they “tag” you when posting.

That in turn gets you another client or two who sees those photos, who trusts the person sharing those photos, and boom💥 you have a referral!

Now do that for every client and you have exponential referrals.

That’s how you grow your referral “program.”

Want a trick for giving clients a passive way to refer you?

Share their photos on your social media, caption it with a value based lesson other prospects can benefit from, along with a *call to action* to contact you, and tag your client or add them as a collaborator.

That makes it really easy for them to re-share your post.

Now you’ve had one client share your images twice, once with raves about you and another time with a call to action to contact you, doubling your exposure to their audience and therefore the chances of booking a referral!

See how that works?
