7 Things a Pro Headshot Photographer Should Bring to the Table

What should your headshot photographer

actually bring to the table so your session is a success? 🤔

When you hire a headshot photographer, you’re not just paying for someone to click the shutter button. You’re paying for sooo much more than that. You’re investing in the whole experience—from start to finish—and most importantly, the result.

After all, your headshots should bring a real return on your investment (ROI).

So how’s that actually happen? It happens when your photographer provides these 7 essentials: ⏬

  1. A Wardrobe Guide: There are certain outfits that communicate “looks” more effectively than others. Interestingly, that’s not always the wardrobe you’ve seen the character wear on TV. On film, there’s context; in a still headshot, there’s none. There’s only your essence and your clothes. Your wardrobe needs to be specific, deliberate, and “on the nose.”
  1. Marketing Suggestions: Generally, if you’ve got an agent, you’ve been given a list of “looks” they want you to capture. If not, your photographer should be able to give you professional guidance on which marketing looks are BEST for you to target within your age range and type.

  1. Professional Makeup: Having your makeup professionally done is ESSENTIAL. Camera coverage’s very different than everyday coverage. Providing makeup artists who’re trained to understand industry standard is key, because not all artists can master the natural, ”no-makeup” makeup look that the industry requires.
  1. Direction: I tend to be a big director behind the camera. I encourage interaction and acting on camera so that you’re very much engaged in the process instead of just posing like a model. This is truly the only way to bring out personality and embody the essence of each look.
  1. Collaboration: As the paying client, you should always have the final say on how your hair, makeup, and outfits look. In my studio, it’s imperative that you get to see and approve the hair, makeup, background, and lighting BEFORE we start shooting each look. Then, after each look, you see the results before moving on so you know you’ve got exactly what you need. 👍🏻

  1. An Open Mind: Every photographer should have your best interest at heart. I personally tend to be very sensitive to your needs and your comfort zone. I don’t believe in imposing my style or my opinions on you. I give you my professional guidance, but ultimately, I listen and deliver what you decide you need.
  1. A Fun & Professional Environment: I’m there when I’m supposed to be. I don’t believe in picking up calls on YOUR time and I like to give you my full attention. Energy is everything, so my baggage (cuz you know, we all have some) gets checked at the door when I’m with you to ensure your day’s productive and fun! ⚡️

The bottom line? Your photographer’s job’s to create an environment that gets you results.

When you mentioned make-up being essential….does that include make-up for men?

Wonderful blog btw. Your head shots are really the gold standard. The epitome of what a head shot should be.
