[Headshots North Hollywood by Vanie]
Weâve all seen it.
Maybe itâs in a Facebook group, an acting class, or in my studio.đ¤ˇđźââď¸
Thereâs always a “grumbling corner” filled with actors, who aren’t working, trading excuses as to why they can’t get work.
“They arenât casting white people anymore.”Â
“Iâm just at such a weird age right now.”Â
“The industry is just dead.”
Amber Hubert: Sexy Girl Next Door / Chris Palmer: Best Friend
Lilia B. : Kids Headshot
Hereâs the truth: none of it is TOTALLY real. Most of it is just noise used to justify why someone isn’t where they want to be.
Eventually, the people in that corner stop being actors and they just become people who used to try. Ask me how I know.đâ
Douglas Olsson: Salesman / Joel Conte: Edgy Young Detective
My partner, Blake, once said something I love: “Donât hang out with the guys grumbling in the corner about how they canât get work.”
The actors who actually book are the ones with their blinders on. They arenât worried about “industry cycles” or âweird ages.âÂ
â¨Theyâre focused on their own path.â¨
They realize that if a peer wins, itâs proof that the industry is working, not a sign that theyâre losing. đŹ
If someone else is doing what you want to do, it’s proof you can too.
Rhyan Schwartz: Guy Next Door / Quirky Office
So instead of grumbling, try this: đ¤ congratulate your peers and ask how they did it.
Genuinely expressing interest in someone elseâs success may automatically open doors for you.Â
If you judge someone for a win, youâre ignoring the years of struggle and failure they went through to get there.Â
But if you celebrate them?Â
Youâre networking with a winner who might just need your type on their next project. đ¤Ż
Celebrating others keeps you in a pro mindset. It keeps you in the game while the grumblers drop out.
